Subsequently, Legal Decoder released the Pricing Engine to help law firms and businesses to more accurately price their services by categorizing work tasks to a granular level. Since then, Legal Decoder has provided legal billing and spend analysis for Fortune 100 companies, AM Law 50 firms, bill examiners and government institutions. JOSEPH R. TIANO, JR.
Founder and Chief Executive Officer
After practicing law for nearly 20 years, Joe founded Legal Decoder because he saw that clients lacked the analytic tools and data to effectively price and manage the cost of legal services delivered by outside counsel. Together with Chris Miller, his Co-Founder, Joe set out to build an intelligent, data driven technology company that would revolutionize the way that legal services from outside counsel are priced and economically evaluated.
Previously, Joe was a Partner at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, LLP and Thelen LLP where he grew and managed all aspects of a multi-million dollar cross-border finance practice. Entrepreneurship runs through Joe’s veins since his early days as a venture capital lawyer representing transformative technology companies, like Blackboard Inc., and many of the outgrowths of Blackboard (WeddingWire, Presidium, Starfish Retention Solutions and others). Joe has been a prolific writer publishing numerous articles on substantive legal issues and the legal industry in general.
Joe graduated from Georgetown University in 1992 with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Business Administration and received his J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1995. Joe lives in Falls Church, Virginia with his wife, Meredith, and their two boys, Gabriel and John-Paul.
During the rare moments when he is not working, Joe can be found taking his sons on hikes, teaching them how to ride bikes and helping Meredith implement her design creations.
CHRISTOPHER J. MILLER
Co-Founder, Chief Technology Officer and Chief Operating Officer
As the Co-Founder, Chief Technology Officer and Chief Operating Officer of Legal Decoder, Chris has led the design, development and implementation of Legal Decoder’s proprietary Legal Spend Authentication (LSA) solution and data platform. Chris is also responsible for overseeing business operations and processes. He is an expert in database design and architecture, data warehousing and business intelligence and analytics. Prior to joining Legal Decoder, Chris held senior roles at Datastrong, Merkle, DATAllegro (acquired by Microsoft) and Clareos.
Chris holds a B.A. degree in Economics and Computer Science From Georgetown University and an M.B.A. degree from the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University. Chris lives in Falls Church, Virginia with his wife, Martha, their 12 year old son and twin 10 year old boys.
When Chris isn’t drawing database flow charts on a white board, you can find him playing or coaching various sports with his boys, watching college basketball, or running around Falls Church
Vice President of Technology
Brian serves as the Vice President of Technology, developing and refining the technology platform. He primarily focuses on the categorization and compliance engines that power the Legal Spend Analyzer, working closely with Legal Decoder’s subject matter experts to turn their decades of industry experience into intelligent applications that apply natural language processing and data analytics to identify inefficiencies in clients’ outside counsel spend. Brian brings over 15 years of experience in systems development centered around data analysis and visualization to Legal Decoder. His diverse professional experience includes work for leading multi-national account firms, fortune 500 corporations, Am Law 50 law firms, law enforcement, and US intelligence agencies.
Brian earned a bachelors from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University.
VP of Client Operations and General Manager
Jason leads Client Operations by working with clients on data and business requirements as well as leading internal operations (establishing processes, implementing new technology). He also leads Product Development at Legal Decoder working on system engineering, product marketing, and data analysis. Jason brings 15+ years of work experience in software engineering and management consulting on large enterprise systems and IT modernization.
Jason graduated with a bachelors from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University.
During off hours Jason enjoys cycling, traveling, and spending time with his wife exploring the DC dining scene.
Vice President of Strategy and Growth
Doug oversees development of our business strategy and leads our marketing and sales efforts. He is also responsible for business partner alliances and customer success.
Doug brings a wealth of experience from IBM where he led North America sales for their information governance solutions; think eDiscovery, Records Management, and Compliance. Prior to that he was a Managing Director at Huron in their Legal Solutions practice. Doug has over 30 years of proven business experience in high growth organizations. His entrepreneurial role in founding 5 companies is punctuated by his recent consulting with several tech startups including being an advisor to Legal Decoder.
Doug holds a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering from Oregon State University. He enjoys spending time with his wife Kim their kids and grandkids. Doug can often be found hiking, sailing, and helping entrepreneurs realize their dreams.
